Police investigate shots fired at daycare center and church building in Chesapeake – The Virginian-Pilot

Chesapeake police are investigating a shooting Tuesday afternoon in Lake Ahoy Shoppes that damaged a daycare center and a church.

Gunfire shattered the windows of the Small Voices’ Academy and the Grace Worship Center on Airline Boulevard, police say. The daycare and the church are side by side.

There were 10 children and four staff members at the back of the Small Voices building at the time of the shots, and the church was unoccupied, a police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.

There was an initial report of injuries at the scene, but police were unable to locate anyone injured in the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

It is not known how many shots were fired.

A person who only identified himself as a Grace Worship Center pastor responded to a reporter’s request via the church’s Facebook page to say no one was injured on either other of the two sites.

“We don’t know any information about the incident and why it happened. No one was injured in the two affected buildings,” the person wrote. “But what we do know is that it is time to pray for our nation!”

Investigators do not believe the daycare center or the church were the targets of the shooting. A police spokesman said they had no information on who fired the shots, but were looking for surveillance footage of the incident.

The spokesperson could not confirm whether it was a drive-by shooting.

Attempts to reach Small Voices were unsuccessful Wednesday morning.
