Fire in Hueytown destroys building of New Mount Moriah Baptist Church
BIRMINGHAM Ala. (WIAT) – The New Mount Moriah Baptist Church caught fire, causing massive destruction to the building on Friday afternoon.
Hueytown and Bessemer Fire Departments responded to the call around 1:30 p.m. The aftermath left the area foggy with smoke filling the air, but all flames were extinguished. Firefighters say no one was injured.
Paramedic Lt. Justin Saltur says the Hueytown Fire Department believes the church fire started in the attic. By the time anyone noticed, it was too late.
He says the church building cannot be salvaged, as much of the church is now burnt down.
“This church will not be salvageable and of course the city building inspectors and all will be involved from now on,” Saltur said. “They will have to tear down and rebuild.”
Although nothing can be done to save the church building, Judge Debra Bennett Winston, First Lady of the Church, says they are grateful to first responders and ready to move forward.
“I have no idea what the plans are,” Bennett said. “We are just grateful for the relationship we have with the city administration. We know it’s the building. This is not the church. So we know for sure that we are moving on.
Saltur says the original cause of the fire is still under investigation.
