KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A subway congregation struggles to recover after their church is damaged by fire.

The pastor of New City Church, near South Early Street and Shawnee Road, said someone passing the church around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning noticed the smoke and flames and called 9-1- 1 for help.

The New City Church said someone set fire to a temporary portable toilet that was just outside the church. The flames then spread to the building. The fire damaged the exterior and interior of the building, which also suffered smoke damage.

The church said the building suffered extensive exterior damage and minor interior damage. He is working to make repairs and get the building ready for Sunday services, but members and guests should pay attention to the church’s Facebook page for updates of any changes.

“We are grateful that a neighbor driving called the fire or the damage could have been much greater,” said Pastor Ray Peoples.

The New City Church has a total of five locations in the Kansas City metro.
