BURTON BRIDGE MINISTRY TO MOVE BUSINESS STORE TO BETHANY CHRISTIAN CHURCH BUILDING
The Burton Bridge Ministry thrift store will soon be moving to a new location.
At the ministry meeting last month, the board voted to move operations from The Corner Shoppe to the Bethany Christian Church building. The ministry purchases the church building and adjacent vacant land at 307 and 315 North Brazos Street.
With the upcoming acquisition, the department will move its office and pantry to the current thrift store located at 601 North Main Street. The church remodel is expected to be complete by the end of the year, with the thrift store reopening in its new location in January 2022. The office will move shortly thereafter.
According to a statement, the ministry eventually hopes to use the church building for its administrative office and small community events hall to host meals for seniors, job training seminars and youth programs. He is also looking to possibly place a second building on the vacant land at North Brazos and East Burton streets, which he says will be used for the thrift store, furniture sales and possibly a food pantry.
The department says it has raised $80,000 to date through fundraising and has a commitment from Carmine State Bank for a loan.
While the closure of the church building is scheduled for early October, the church will solemnly hand over the keys to the ministry on Sunday, after its last worship service on site. The ceremony will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and will include light refreshments.
The church congregation will meet as a “home church” with locations announced weekly until the new worship chapel is completed at the site of the original “Bethany” on Christian Cemetery Road.
