List of the day
Location: Huntsville, Alabama
Price: $1.748 million
Built in 1904 and located on a quiet street in the heart of historic Old Town Huntsville, Alabama, this newly remodeled home known as “McGee’s Residence” retains its historic character through a myriad of period details.
The two-story house features an unusual combination of Victorian, Tudor, Greek Revival and Queen Anne architectural styles. According to the listing, McGee’s residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Miss Mollie McGee was a woman who traveled a lot and she lived in hotels most of her life, as it was a big part of her family’s business,” said listing agent Shalu Holman of Engel & Volkers. “When she decided to build her first home in Huntsville, she wanted it to be a fusion of different styles.”
Ms Holman added that Miss McGee and her family were very influential in the development of downtown Huntsville, so she likely worked with the elite designers and architects to help her with the design process. “To me, the house feels like a mini boutique hotel where her family and friends stayed with her,” Ms Holman said. “She was used to living in luxury, but she was also famous for entertaining guests, hosting church fundraisers, and hosting parties and casual lunches for friends and family at her home.”
The first floor of the four-bedroom home features an updated kitchen, large living room and game room, and lots of charming period details, including nine original fireplaces, pocket doors, and transom windows.
Upstairs, the owners’ suite includes beautifully crafted closets and a luxurious bathroom with heated floors, therapeutic bath and sauna.
“I personally love the inviting porch with its large swing set,” Ms. Holman said. “The rustic wine cellar in the basement is a perfect cellar for men, which is rare in this region. Plus, the gorgeous gourmet kitchen overlooks the beautiful backyard with a tree house and hanging chairs. It is a very comfortable and welcoming house.

This 4,494 square foot home sits on a 29,620 square foot lot and features four bedrooms and four full bathrooms.
The spacious gourmet kitchen is equipped with brand new Wolf appliances, Sub-Zero refrigerator, double oven and marble countertops throughout, including on the huge island. Its double doors with large windows lead to an elaborate backyard that houses a tree house with several hanging chairs and a fire pit.

Although the house is located in the heart of Huntsville’s thriving Old Town district, Ms. Holman says the area isn’t very busy and is quite quiet and welcoming. “It’s great for a morning [or] evening walk, walking your pets, riding bikes, visiting neighbors,” she said. “Kids can run and play in privacy in the historic Old Town area.”
Ms Holman added that the house is within walking distance of the Cotton Row & Bottle restaurant, the Honest cafe, the legendary Roosevelt Store, eclectic restaurants like Domaine South and Poppy the Parliament. “Big Spring Park and the Huntsville Art Museum are both a five-minute walk from the house,” Ms. Holman said. “At Christmas you can just walk to the corner of Holmes and Clinton to see the town’s Christmas parade.”
